What do you need to know before learning fashion drawing?
Nothing.
You don’t need any special skills or talents, you only need your will to learn and practice as much as you can.
Many people keep themselves from learning something new because they’re afraid of messing up, or not being good enough.
But, you’re learning to become better, so don’t worry if you’ve never drawn a thing.
What is fashion drawing?
Well, fashion illustration is sort of the communication of fashion that comes from illustration, drawing, and painting.
So, fashion drawing is the foundation of every fashion illustration. It’s where all the magic begins, and it includes:
- The body
- The face + the hair
- The clothing + accessories
Let’s see each of them more thoroughly.
1 | The body, or commonly called the fashion figure.
The body in fashion drawing or fashion illustration is often elongated to make it look more stylish and to make of the garments the focus point.
The body for fashion designers is the canvas of their designs and ideas. It’s important for all fashion designers to be able to see how their garments are going to look on the human body.
And it’s also imperative to be able to communicate exactly that, how the garments look and interact with the body.
For fashion illustrators, the body is another element to express and convey the concept or theme of inspiration.
2 | The face and the hair.
Often, fashion designers draw the face and the hair pretty generally, sometimes like a doodle because the focus point of their illustrations is the garments. And it’s their goal to communicate the clothing more than anything else.
Fashion illustrators, treat the face and the hair similarly to the body. Depending on what they want to convey, they manipulate the face and the hair.
Well, if you want to be a fashion designer, and want to focus merely on the designs then it’s not crucial that you master how to draw faces and hair.
But, if you want to be a fashion illustrator, then it’s vital that you know how to draw faces in different poses, having diverse features, and conveying different emotions. And it’s also important to know how to draw several hairstyles to give your illustrations variety.
3 | The clothing + accessories.
These are all kinds of garments, shoes, bags, jewelry, hats, and other.
Finally, the main focus point for fashion designers: the clothing and accessories. Here’s where fashion designers add the most detail and take the most time – because this is what they want to communicate the most accurately and precisely.
Most of the times, the clothing and accessories are also the focus point for fashion illustrators. Although, some fashion illustrations don’t feature any clothing or accessories, but a fashion attitude or mood.
And, whether you want to be a fashion designer or illustrator, you must know how to draw clothing and accessories, and how they interact with the body according to the materials they’re made of.
Who should learn fashion drawing?
Both aspiring fashion designers and fashion illustrators should learn fashion drawing because, like I said, it’s the foundation of every fashion illustration.
Aspiring fashion designers should learn fashion drawing so they can communicate their designs and ideas.
As fashion designers we can’t work alone and produce everything ourselves. We have to work with a team, we have to share our ideas with the people involved in the production, and we also have to share our designs with buyers, customers, sales agents, etcetera.
And aspiring fashion illustrators must learn fashion drawing because it’s where the whole work begins. Most of the times we fashion illustrators start with a drawing of what will turn into an illustration.
Some illustrators don’t start with a drawing per se, they start painting, but they already know what to paint and how to paint because they learned everything about fashion drawing, body and face proportions, and how clothing and different kinds of fabric look on the body.
Fashion Drawing is Important…
Fashion drawing is important whether you want to become a fashion designer or a fashion illustrator because it helps you convey your ideas and designs and turn them into reality.
So, now you know what’s fashion drawing, what you need to know before learning it, and why it’s so important that you learn it if you want to become a fashion designer or illustrator.
